Ghost nets, or abandoned plastic fishing nets, trap marine life while taking centuries to break down. Once thought nearly impossible to locate, Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab, Accenture, and WWF have launched GhostNetZero.ai, a platform that uses sonar data and AI to locate ghost nets with 94% accuracy. Over 33 tons of ghost nets have already been removed from the Baltic Sea, and the global project is calling on offshore operators, research institutes, and divers to share sonar data and support cleanup efforts for healthier oceans.
